Restoring The Fortunes of Israel

Examine ten instances in the prophets where this expression occurs. Learn to whom and about whom the Scriptures were speaking when God made this declaration. As it concerns events in our time in history, it is important to understand!

# 2

The Identity of The Messiah

Consider the question about his identity that the blind man whom Jesus healed was asked by those who knew him as a beggar. He answered "I am he." Then instances when Jesus gave this answer to identity questions that were asked of him are considered. They lead to his answer in John 8:58 KJV where he said "Before Abraham was, I am." Why this answer does not teach that Jesus was cryptically saying that he was Yahweh God of the Old Testament is explained.

# 3

Prayer To Our Creator

Consider the way in which nine men and women who offered prayer address the God to whom they prayed. In each case it was important to them to recognize the One to whom they prayed as their Creator. It was an acknowledgment of the power of the Creator to bring about deliverance, to change circumstances in a manner that no man could accomplish.

# 4

Messiah's Right To The Throne of David

Consider the historical circumstances in which David's throne was established. It alone was Yahweh's throne. The Davidic dynasty ended because the kings of his line were not faithful to the God of Israel. It was not finished but suspended. The prophets describe, and the New Testament confirms, how it is God's intention to restore the throne of David to Israel. The one "whose right it is" to ascend the throne and rule from it restored in Jerusalem is the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth.

# 5

From Heaven or From Men?

Investigates the criteria that Jesus taught the people for assessing whether the claims of the religious leaders of his day were authentic. They were influenced by many factors -- prestige, vanity, popularity, recognition, wealth, and power -- which are things of men not from heaven. The relevance of this lesson is that these factors were weaknesses common to our human nature which remain valid criteria to continue to use today in assessing those institutions and leaders who claim to represent God's authority on earth.

# 6

Christ's Coming Mistaken Identity

Investigate the widely-held expectation that a person will appear on the stage of history, claiming to be the Messiah of Israel, and convincing the Jewish people in Israel, but who is really an imposter, the Antichrist.  Consider the similarity between what the Bible teaches that Christ will do at his second coming and what the Antichrist is expected to do. This scenario sets up a great deception, not the Jews being deceived but the Christian Zionists, who mistake Christ for the Antichrist.

# 7

The Four Dimensions of The Blessing of Abraham

Open up what the Scriptures teach about the blessing that God gave to Abraham and to his offspring. The heirs of the blessing that make up the offspring of Abraham are determined by God, not on the basis of their physical, lineal descent from Abraham, but by their identification with the faith of Abraham. This means of inclusion through Christ is the great secret disclosed in the New Testament as to how Gentiles could be counted as the offspring of Abraham. What the inheritance consists of -- land promised to Abraham and his offspring forever -- is shown from the Scriptures. The pre-eminence of Christ as the heir of the blessings and the one whose redemptive sacrifice made it sure are emphasized.

# 8

Destroying The Works of The Devil

investigate the use of this phrase in the 1st epistle of John. There are two statements of the reason why Christ appeared in this Scripture and the context shows that they must be equivalent. This equivalence provides a key to unlocking the understanding of what the works of the devil are and the identity of the devil.

# 9

By The Mouth of God's Holy Prophets

Investigate the use of this phrase in the two places where it is used in the New Testament Scripture. The first occurrence is in the message that Zacharias, the father of John the Baptizer, gave at his son's birth. The second occurrence is in the message that Peter delivered to the people of Israel after Pentecost in the temple. This study compares both messages to establish the outline of the good news plan that God spoke through His prophets long ago.

The Cutting of the Covenant

Consider why in the Hebrew language making a covenant was referred to as "cutting a covenant."  This study considers why animal sacrifices were offered and blood was shed in order to make covenants - and how that ritual pointed forward to the offering of Christ to ratify the everlasting covenant God made with Abraham and his offspring.

# 12

The Blood of the Covenant

Consider how the Bible uses the phrase, "the blood of the covenant," in both the Old and New Testaments.  At communion where bread is broken and wine is supped, the words of Jesus about the wine representing the new covenant in his blood are often cited. What do they mean? Who are the parties to this covenant? Why is it called the "new" covenant? What was the "old" covenant? Why does "the blood of the covenant" matter to us?

# 13

Five Reasons For Faith In God

Consider why we all believe in many things that we cannot see. Isn't the primary reason because unseen things explain so many things that we can see? That's true whether the unseen things are events that happened in the past, like the resurrection of Jesus, or phenomena that we observe in the present, living the amazing human body.

# 14

Seven Bible Figures For Being Forgiven

Why is it hard for us to admit when we have made a mistake? The Bible uses many figures to convey to us the concept of forgiveness  - washing away dirt, covering nakedness, sending away sin, granting a pardon to a prisoner, removing the entry from a record book, cancelling a debt owed, and restoring health and wholeness to one who is sick and disabled.  They all depend on confession from the heart.

# 15

What It Means To Be 'In The Flesh'

Why God Chose Israel

The Jews are known as "the chosen people." This scriptural way of referring to the Jewish people has stirred the resentment of non-Jews. It was a factor in the Nazi obsession with the Jews that led to the Holocaust. Consider the reasons the Bible gives for His choosing this people.

# 18

The "Scale Model" of God's Kingdom

Consider why architects often build scale models of projects first before the actual project is constructed. God used the same principles in providing the historical kingdom of Israel as a scale model of the coming Kingdom of God on earth.

# 19

The Identity of The Beast

The prophet Daniel had a dream about four beasts -- a lion, a bear, a leopard and a ten-horned wild beast.  Consider why this fourth beast is identified with the Roman Empire and how the Book of Revelation gives more information about its three distinct phases: the great red dragon, the beast arising out of the sea, and the scarlet beast on which the woman sat.

# 20

The Mark of The Beast

Consider the eight instances where the "mark of the beast" is mentioned in the last book of the Bible. Drawing on information and clues given in these references, consider the evidence that "the mark of the beast" is the symbol of the cross made on the forehead in the liturgy of many Catholic and other Christian churches.

October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, was a day that shocked the world. Consider what the Bible says about Esau's hatred for his brother, Jacob and how the events of that tragic day confirm the Bible's testimony. Esau is one of the principal progenitors of the Arab peoples. Jacob is the patriarch whose name was changed to Israel and he is the progenitor of the Jews.

# 23

The Role of Arabs in The Holocaust

Consider the evidence for the role played by Arabs, led by the Grand Mufti of Palestine, Haj Amin Al-Husseini, in fomenting trouble for the British that led them to greatly restrict Jewish immigration to the Holy Land, thereby sealing the fate of many European Jews, trapped by the conquests of the Nazis. Does the prophecy of Obadiah foretell this day of Judah's calamity?

The Extent of Noah's Flood

Consider what the Bible says about the extent of Noah's flood in coming to a conclusion whether it was worldwide or localized in its extent. Learn why the answer matters - to God's being true to His covenant with Noah and to our understanding of how the flood was a pattern of things to come at Christ's return.

# 32

Citizenship: In Heaven and On Earth

Consider the language of the New Testament which speaks of our citizenship being "in heaven" and our treasures being "in heaven."  Does this language teach heaven-going for those who die or does it mean that things that are coming on the earth at Christ's return are according to Heaven's will and not man's?

# 33

Time, Space and Eternity

A long-standing challenge to Bible timelines arises from astronomical calculations which posit that the earth is nearly fifteen billion years old, as measured by the time it has taken light to travel across the expanse of the universe.  What does the Bible declare about the age of the universe? How can a young age for the heavens and earth be reconciled with current theories of cosmology?

# 37

Why Is God Called "the God of Abraham?"

Consider why God is identified as "the God of Abraham" seventeen times in the Bible. Why is God willing to be associated with specific flesh and blood individuals in this way? What can we learn from the names that God gave to Abram (Abraham) and Sarai (Sarah) about the prophetic meaning of His own name?

# 38

Why God's Revelation Was Put In Writing
